Günther Welsch (Aged 58) is the Director of the Division Cryptography and Protection of Classified Information of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) located in Bonn, Germany. His department is in charge of approval, accreditation and evaluation of IT-Security and cryptographic products within the German Information Assurance (IA) scheme. As in his role as CIO he oversees the strategic planning and the operations of the IT within the BSI.
Günther Welsch graduated in electrical engineering and completed his PhD thesis on the simulation of microelectronic circuits in 1998. Until 2009 he joined some business employers, e.g. Deutsche Telekom AG, before moving to the government service. He started within the IT-Security policy unit at the Federal Ministry of Interior. In 2012 he moved to the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) where he was head of two different sub-divisions before being promoted to his current position in 2017.
