Quantum-safe ePassports:Migrating Electronic Travel Documents to Post-Quantum Security

The rise of quantum computing poses a significant threat to the cryptographic security mechanisms of electronic Machine Readable Travel Documents (eMRTDs). Migration strategies must account for the specific details of the travel document ecosystem, in particular by considering the decentralized architecture of the system, the long validity periods of travel documents, and the specific needs of both issuing authorities and border control. This talk will explore current challenges and potential options currently being discussed within international standardisation efforts driven by ICAO and ISO for the transition of electronic travel documents towards quantum safe mechanisms.
